We have a prolific apple tree so I like to make some apple butter each year. I make it in the crockpot and in a pinch can use it as an applesauce substitute when I'm baking and discover I am out, but the best use is on bread or pancakes.
My kids have all made this recipe for the county and state fair over the years. We also give jams and apple butter for gifts.
My Mom made this for me when I was a kid and now I make it for my kids. It is hard to beat hot brown sugar syrup on pancakes. It also is made from ingredients I always have on hand.
My husband liked the Soda Stream Ginger Ale but the price kept going up and I didn't like the artifical sweetners so I played around and created this syrup recipe. After drinking our homemade ginger ale he could hardly drink the store bought version.
I usually make a batch of peach butter when they are on sale cheap. This recipe is different since it is made in the microwave.
We have a manchurian apricot bush (tree) in our yard. I felt terrible throwing away tons of these every spring, but you definitely can't eat them straight and even though it said they were a cooking apricot they did not work to dry or cook wih. Finally this year I found a jam recipe. It is great.
This is absolutely delicous. I used two packages of pectin like my canning book called for, but it set before it was done with the hot water bath!!! I changed to one pouch of liquid pectin. It set up nicely and makes the jam a lot less expensive. Super ripe cherries might need the second package.
Strawberry Jam is a favorite for gifts and to eat. I always wind up with tons of foam when I make Strawberry jam. I started saving it in a pyrex dish and using it as jelly as well. It works fine although it doesn't taste as good.
My Dad use to take us all to pick wild plums when my kids were little to make jelly. They make great jelly but it is a lot of work. It always made me think of my grandparents and great grandparents and how hard they worked to survive.
